In December 2007, 30% of major online retailers (this is up from the 24% ten months before) offered – alternatively to credit cards – new payment methods, according to a study by Brulant. The first 3 positions in their usage prevalence list are now as follows: Bill-Me-Later – more then 20%, PayPal – 19%, Google Checkout – about 10%. At the same time, more than 3/4 of online retailers surveyed accepted private label gift cards.
"One of the most surprising findings is the increase in retailers offering all three alternative payment methods," said Adam Cohen, Brulant principal. "Today we find 5% adoption of all three, at a variety of retailers from Toys 'R Us to PetSmart to Rite Aid."
In adoption between February and December 2007, PayPal’s increase was the largest – at 217%, the same of Google Checkout was 200%.
