According to the recent researches with Christmas season at its peak hackers become more active as well. So, last year the shopping season between September and December cyber attacks increased several times.
One of the popular ways to get into users computers is social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace. The malefactors steal the details of Facebook profiles and sell them to cybercriminal gangs for just 89p each, reports ITProPortal. The further scheme is clear: the fraudsters send spam messages to computer users and urge them to visit counterfeit video or image links.
There is no necessity to explain that most of those links lead to the malicious sites which infect users’ computers with malware and spyware viruses that can track keystrokes entered, along with other significant information, such as usernames and passwords of online bank accounts.
According to the investigation of Trend Micro set of credit card details is being sold for GBP 25, while online banking log-ins are priced at GBP 35 each.
“Whether you're going online to use Facebook, or for banking or Christmas shopping, you should be aware that hacking and identity theft tends to increase at certain times of the year,” warned Rik Ferguson from Trend Micro.
