Theoretical and practical course in Obopay

May 21, 2008 - 8:18pm | author: ayny | |

Last time we have already discussed Obopay payment system, but we thought that general information is not enough as usually the practice is much more important. And even though we already mentioned general services and registration procedures last time, anyway we find it useful to focus on the latter two moments more closely and to reveal to you how to work with Obopay in more details.

Come on! Go ahead!

"How long does it take to become an Obopay member? I want to send and receive money right away!"

This question may be found among all other frequently asked on Obopay page. And for the answer there are quite cheerful words: "It takes just a few minutes and a few pieces of information to get started... You can start using Obopay on your phone right after sign-up."

So, let's take "a few pieces of information". Well, first is that registration is free of charge and after the registration you may download the company's software to use it on your mobile phone for financial transactions via your handset or you may operate your account right from the website. And not the last thing to be mentioned is that "Obopay is a mobile payment service that lets you send and receive money from any of the 200+ million mobile phones in the US." Consequently non residents should forget about the service so far.

After your visit the company's webpage with the intention to send and receive money with Obopay, you need to directly click on a bar with a conspicuous title "Sign up".

Now there is a suggestion made by the system to choose an account type: "Select the way you want to send and receive money from other Obopay users. Once you've made your selection, you're just a few minutes away from using Obopay." It is up to your wish and your circumstances to determine whether you would better create an Obopay account or use your existing checking or savings account.

In case you choose the first option your account will feature as follows:

  • You may send money from your secure, Obopay account.
  • All money sent to you goes into your Obopay account.

No credit check required.

If you decide to select the second option you are provided with the features like these:

  • Send money from your bank account, or your debit or credit card.
  • All money sent to you goes directly into your bank account.
  • Use your existing debit card to withdraw and spend money.

For instance, we decided to open a new Obopay account. Having marked, or putting into Obopay slang having ‘obolized' the item ‘Create an Obopay account" we push the button "Continue". Then we may see the application form to be filled in. In the application you should point out the information about your name, address, your e-mail, mobile phone number, and your date of birth. Besides you are to compile a username, password, PIN and a secret question with a secret answer to it. Obopay draws user's attention to the necessity of properly treating the password matter. "To protect your account, each new user must choose a password at least 6-characters long when they sign up. To make your password as secure as possible, think about using a combo of letters, numbers and symbols (such as: $, %, @, etc.). Pick something that is easy for you to remember, but hard for others to guess. Do not give out your password to anyone."

A secret question and an answer (Q & A) to it are composed to restore the password that a user might have forgotten. In case a user forgets its Q & A, he needs to contact Obopay Customer Service and be ready to provide information about the account in order to verify his identity.

Again, you click the button "Continue and save". But before you do it, there is a little box under the application fields. This box must be checked which will confirm that you have read the Obopay Terms and Conditions and the Obopay Privacy Policy as well as the agreement to receive disclosures electronically. Your clicking the bar to continue means that you admit validity of the subtext that reads: "By clicking "Continue and Save," I expressly authorize Obopay to send me commercial messages by email and SMS to the email address and phone number I have input above. I understand I can opt out of promotional messages by Obopay at any time by changing my preferences on my own account page or following the opt out instructions in the email or text message. Standard carrier charges and taxes may apply to any text messages that Obopay may send to your wireless device."

The system thoroughly checks the information provided by a new user therefore possibility to hocus it is practically eliminated.

Having filled in the application you should confirm your information and then confirm your phone number.

But, of course, we may act another way. We can sign up with existing checking or savings account. The application form is absolutely the same as in the previous option.

So we fill in the application followed by the same two steps with the only difference - before we confirm our information and our phone number, we should add a bank account.

Now we may enter log in. To start using Obopay system we can either download Obopay mobile application or send and receive money through text messaging (SMS) if we fail to have this application downloaded or installed.

The application is downloadable both from the website through Internet and from your mobile phone by going to wap.obopay.com. Assume we select the first alternative. For this you should log into your Obopay account and select the top menu option 'Use Obopay'. You will be instructed step by step how to more efficiently get Obopay onto your phone.

Although Obopay optionally supports SMS it is more convenient when using the Obopay application software resident on your mobile phone. Besides it has a richer functionality.

Top up your Obopay account

"Add money" feature allows you to add money to your Obopay account using the following methods:

  • Credit Card
  • Debit Card (money comes out of the bank account it's associated with)

You can add funds from your bank account or from a credit/debit card on your phone if you have already set it up from the Obopay website. To set up a new bank account or credit/debit card select "Payment Methods".

Adding money from a credit or debit card is instant. The money added with credit or debit cards will be available to send/spend within moments after you request it. Any credit or debit card with either the Visa® or MasterCard ® logo can be used to add money. The minimum amount to be placed is $10, and the maximum amount is $310 per week. You can add money to up to 3 times per week, for up to $310 per week.

You can also use cash at what Obopay is calling a "load network center" in your neighborhood.

Once you've successfully opened and funded an Obopay account, you'll soon receive an Obopay MasterCard Debit Card in the mail - which can be used to spend the funds in your Obopay account (or to withdraw cash at ATMs) everywhere that MasterCard is accepted.
