Trump sets goal to create USA military Space Force by 2020

President Donald Trump ordered the creation of Space Force in June, arguing the Pentagon needs it to tackle vulnerabilities in space and assert U.S. dominance in orbit.

"We have not done cost estimation yet", Shanahan told reporters at the Pentagon, adding that he expects he won't have a more concrete number until November.

Mattis once voiced opposition to creating a new branch of the USA military to focus on space-based military assets, saying in a 2017 letter to a lawmaker that would likely "present a narrower and even parochial approach to space operations".

Vice President Mike Pence said Thursday that the Trump administration wants a new "Space Force" ready for battle by the year 2020 - charging that Russia, China, North Korea and Iran have already militarized the final frontier and that the United States needs to catch up.

Establishing a new military service geared at space would be a massive undertaking and require action from Congress both to establish the service and provide funding.

Shanahan - who led the new Pentagon report that details what the department can do to stand up the new service sans Congress - said he supports the Space Force's creation.

"This is a process we're in", Mattis noted.

"We need to address space as a developing, war-fighting domain and a combatant command is certainly one thing that we can establish", he said.

Several lawmakers have already hit back at the move as being costly and unnecessary. Another dissed the ridiculous plan, writing, "Gov't: Sorry we can't give you healthcare, we had to stick to absolute necessities like [checks notes] a Space Force".

The Pentagon report recommended that for now the unified command be in the hands of the Air Force, which currently oversees some of the most critical space-based capabilities.

"We are glad that the Pentagon is finally taking these steps in enhancing our space strength", Republican Rep. Mike Rogers of Alabama and Democratic Rep. Jim Cooper of Tennessee, the Chairman and Ranking Member of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, said in a statement following the report's release.

"Our nation's armed forces have always been the vanguard of advancing American leadership here on Earth and beyond", Pence said.

"It's like they're not even trying to hide how useless even the idea of a space force is", wrote one Twitter user.

One of the key functions of the new branch would be to aid United States forces on the ground and the air force, giving them combat superiority. He said Beijing and Moscow have been developing missiles, lasers and other technologies with the aim of targeting U.S. satellites.

But Mr Pence was carrying the Trump message loud and clear today, describing space as "crowded and adversarial". He also says that the current system, with the Air Force in charge of military space operations, is not ideal. We are in complete alignment with the president's concern about protecting our assets in space that contribute to our security, to our economy.
