Thomas opens three-shot lead over McIlroy at Bridgestone

"I'm fine. I just played like crap", Woods said with frankness after he fell from the top-10 to T-28 with a 3-under 207 aggregate score, 11 off Justin Thomas' lead. I stand with the group that's curious about how Woods' body will hold up over the final two months of the year as he strains it with the most tournaments he's played since probably 2012. Australian Jason Day is another shot back after a 69.

AKRON, Ohio - Like he has done so many times before, Tiger Woods fired an iron shot toward the 18th hole at Firestone Country Club on Sunday, with thousands of cheering spectators then watching him convert the birdie putt. He would make just one par on the back nine to go along with three birdies, three bogeys and two double-bogeys for a four-over 40.

But Woods seemed to take the uneven performance in stride, recognizing that he is not always going to be at the top of his game and setting his attention toward this week's PGA Championship in St. Louis. He turned in a dud, and a birdie on the 18th hole gave him another 73 to leave him 15 shots behind.

"I'm glad I finally played well around here, just in time to leave", he said.

Woods has won the event eight times while he's also won eight times on the Torrey Pines course and has also lifted the Arnold Palmer Invitational trophy on eight occasions. The World Series of Golf began in 1962, and it became an official PGA Tour event in 1976.

There are 45 players under par out of 71 through 36 holes and Woods actually lost ground on the leaders after starting the day four strokes back. We'll see. I've been in the position before that I am now. Johnson bogeyed the last hole for a 64 and shared third with Thorbjorn Olesen of Denmark, who also had a 64.

And a birdie from 12 feet on the 13th effectively sealed a first World Golf Championship title and the winner's cheque of $1.3m for Thomas ahead of the final major of the season at Bellerive Country Club.

U.S. Open champion Brooks Koepka had a 67 to finish fifth. He went 1 over the rest of the way for a 68, leaving him five shots behind.

At the 467-yard par-4 14th, Woods's tee shot went 294 yards to the left intermediate rough, his second shot went 165 yards to the right front greenside bunker, and his sand shot went 19 yards to the green where he had a two-putt for a bogey. This isn't my first time in contention to win on Sunday, so I'm far more prepared for what I'll feel tomorrow.

"I just didn't hit it as sharp as I would have liked", Woods said. "I know I was quite a bit back going into today, so I needed to make a lot of points".

"It felt good, I hit a few more fairways today which definitely helped", McIlroy told Sky Sports.
