Russian Federation names Steven Seagal ‘special representative’ to improve US relations

Steven Seagal is trading his martial arts training for diplomatic skills in his new role as the Russian Foreign Ministry's special representative to improve United States and Russian relations.

This will cover "culture, art, public and youth exchanges, among other things", the Russian Foreign Ministry said on its Facebook page.

According to the statement, his unpaid posting will be to promote intercontinental relations "in the humanitarian sphere", and will be similar to the United Nations' goodwill ambassador positions.

Seagal has been a regular visitor to Russia for years, and Putin granted the American actor a Russian passport in 2016.

Seagal has also been one of Putin's biggest supporters, and defended the Russian leader against charges of US election meddling during an interview with Piers Morgan on "Good Morning Britain" previous year.

The president has said on multiple occasions that he believes the USA would benefit from improving relations with Russian Federation.

It would be recalled that an alleged Russian spy with apparent ties to a Donald Trump campaigner in has been in the news concerning Russia's interference with the 2016 presidential election. The countries have also been at odds over the Syrian civil war and the Russian annexation of Crimea.

Seagal, who sometimes appears on Russian state TV to talk about his views and career, was cited by Kremlin-backed TV station RT as welcoming the appointment.

According to Seagal's own website, the 66-year-old has been a regular visitor to Russian Federation for over a decade. -Russian relations. The title bestowed upon him is that of a "special representative" for the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
