Renault Believe Ricciardo Capture is a Sign of Progress

In what could be the biggest gamble in his Formula One career, Daniel Ricciardo has chose to leave Aston Martin Red Bull Racing at the end of the ongoing season.

Australian driver Daniel Ricciardo is leaving Red Bull at the end of the season and joining Renault, the two Formula One teams announced on Friday. It was widely expected that the Australian would remain alongside Max Verstappen for next season, where Red Bull will run Honda power units for the first time.

"By far the toughest decision I've made in my racing career but twenty-nine years living on this earth, it was actually one of the toughest life decisions I've made".

Ricciardo's arrival leaves Spaniard Carlos Sainz, who is on loan from Red Bull alongside Germany's Nico Hulkenberg, looking for a new home.

But I thought that it was time for me to take on a fresh and new challenge.

Despite team boss Christian Horner claiming a new deal was close only last month, the 29-year-old has since decided to make the move to Renault.

Ricciardo has won the Chinese and Monaco races so far this year and sits fifth in the drivers' standings, 95 points behind championship leader Lewis Hamilton.

Daniel Ricciardo is to leave Red Bull at the end of the 2018 season for Renault.

What's unclear is what exactly prompted Ricciardo to make the step-down but what is for definite is Renault will be a whole lot stronger come next season.

"Signing Daniel Ricciardo is a unique opportunity for the Groupe Renault towards this objective that could not be missed". Ricciardo added: "I hope to be able to help them in this journey".

Red Bull has played a distant third fiddle to Ferrari and Mercedes in 2018.

Red Bull meanwhile need to find a replacement for Ricciardo.

Ricciardo drove for Renault in Formula 1's developmental levels from 2007-2011 and has driven a Renault-powered auto ever since joining Red Bull Racing.

Ricciardo's shock decision to quit Red Bull for Renault will have immediate and unexpected repercussions in the F1 driver market.

He said, "We fully respect Daniel's decision to leave Aston Martin Red Bull Racing and we wish him all the best in his future".

But Hamilton finished fourth in the Driver's standings the next year before the team went on to dominate the next five years of F1.

Racing fans would recognise it as the exact post Mercedes used as a prelude to their most recent contract announcements ahead of the German Grand Prix, as the team dangled the idea of Ricciardo donning white.
