Form Thomas ready for US PGA defence

Xander Schauffele never has represented his country in a golf competition.

"Even though he's won 14 of these things, if you haven't done it for awhile, you still have to re-learn a few things, and I think he's going through that stage. To be part of it would be really special".

The reigning PGA Championship victor averages 313.8 yards off the tee, putting him ninth on the PGA Tour in driving distance and within spitting distance of big hitters such as Dustin Johnson. The PGA Championship is being staged for the final time in the month of August.

"I did not ask for that pairing, " Furyk said.

As it stands now, the top eight are: Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Patrick Reed, Justin Thomas, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson. He moved to No. 11, and with one-and-a-half the value of points for everyone but the victor at Bellerive, this is a big chance.

Even if his standings shift this week, Furyk faces some interesting decisions.

Tiger Woods used to be an intimidating presence at the Ryder Cup - to his own team mates, captain Jim Furyk said on Wednesday.

He is 20th in the American standings, way outside the top eight who will qualify automatically this Sunday, but a near certainty to get one of Furyk's four captain's picks. He will make his four captain's picks September 5. That being said, he pulled out of the Bridgestone Invitational with back spasms, and that fact is enough to make him unplayable in some formats.

Which is understandable because their form has varied from very good to well below par over the course of the season.

"I think this golf course, the way it's set up and the way it's playing, if there was ever a major championship to be able to play it semi blind, I think this is the course to do it on". Who has some guts?

Phil Mickelson is at No. 10, and there is pride at stake.

"The people at American Express were struggling at the time", Woods said.

"You always do, that's human nature. We know what side Bryson is on compared to the rest of us". One of the subplots at Bellerive is Woods' chances of securing a spot on the U.S. Ryder Cup team. Winning in France will not be easy.

He played exclusively with Steve Stricker in 2010 and 2012, and also played multiple matches with Davis Love, Mark O'Meara and Steve Pate. Because we're not going to get any run, it's not going to dry out the rest of the week. But on Tuesday it was Thomas Bjorn, with four captain's picks for his European squad to take on the United States in Paris next month, who was quizzed about Woods. We just saw Justin Rose.

And there were bigger kids - old enough to understand the magnitude of the event, but young enough to still pull off some autographs.

"It's right in front of you", he added. Italy's Francesco Molinari won three times, including the Open at Carnoustie. "So he has been challenging this year and moving up that points list, which has been fun to watch".

"I had a lot of stretching". "He's learned how to make a swing work for him again".

"Hopefully, I'll have a couple of majors by the end of my career when I'm done". Thomas plays the opening two days with Woods and Rory McIlroy.

His buddy Adam Trunko, 18, declared that "we don't want to give away our secret location", but he then broke down and dished the dirt. No one was in any mood to play a golf tournament after everything that had happened to the country.

Then he has a poor weekend, in which he couldn't find fairways at Firestone, looked exhausted, seemingly had a stiff lower back and wasted a good opportunity to earn FedEx points, world-ranking points and Ryder Cup points.

"So I've done well, I'm slowly getting back up the world rankings". "It doesn't matter if you won nine times the year before or haven't won in three years".

It's a radical idea but most of the best ones are.
