Dravidian icon M Karunanidhi passes away at the age of 94

Karunanidhi, whose original name was Dakshinamurthy, was born in Thirukkuvalai village in Nagapattinam district.

He started his political journey when he was just 14 years old in the DMK.

DMK chief Karunanidhi is on continuous monitoring and being treated with active medical support, the hospital added.

Murasoli's high point was its fierce and principled opposition to the Emergency when it carried a cartoon that depicted Indira Gandhi as Adolf Hitler, which was later picked up and published by Newsweek.

Popularly known as "Kalaignar" - the artist - Karunanidhi was one of the tallest leaders in Indian politics, one of the stewards of the Dravidian self-respect movement, and at the same time, an important contributor to Tamil popular culture.

Karunanidhi penned screenplays and dialogues for over 50 movies. His supporters and fans in Tamil Nadu were anxiously waiting to hear good news about his health after he was admitted to hospital on July 28. He contested - and won - 13 elections in the state. Mr Karunanidhi's DMK swept the election, riding a wave of anti-incumbency.

#03:50 PM: Stalin requests CM Palaniswami for a place along Marina beach: DMK working president MK Stalin has reportedly requested Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K Palaniswami for a place along the Marina beach in Chennai, where they can build a memorial for the ailing DMK chief Karunanidhi.

A big crowd had been thronging the streets outside the hospital since his hospitalisation but it swelled to some 6,000 Tuesday, an AFP photographer estimated, after doctors said he had suffered a "significant decline".

However, the astute caliber of Karunanidhi helped him outwit Neduncheziyan.

Karunanidhi's predecessor Annadurai was also in office when he died. It urged the Centre to make "immediate changes in the Constitution of India to establish a truly federal set-up with full state autonomy".

Former Chief Minister M G Ramachandran and his charismatic protegee, J Jayalalitha, were buried at the Marina beach and their memorials were erected there. Annadurai, who became the chief minister, acknowledged Karunanidhi's role in raising money as well as holding the ranks together. Here is a brief history of his compelling, and equally engaging, journey from M Karunanidhi to Kalaignar Karunanidhi.

A regional party leader becoming indispensable in the national political sphere was something remarkable, said Senthilnathan.
