Dead baby found floating near Brooklyn Bridge

The two witnesses separately called 911 after it was reported that the baby was discovered in the waters off lower Manhattan at about 4 p.m. Sunday, sources said.

Chiropractor Monte Campbell said his wife, Diana Campbell, first noticed the baby. The baby was wearing only diapers.

A baby boy died after he was pulled from the water near the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday afternoon, an NYPD spokesperson said.

The baby was pronounced dead at New York-Presbyterian/Lower Manhattan Hospital, the Times reported.

Austin Campbell, who was visiting the area with his family, said his father jumped into the river with hopes of saving the young child. Investigators also pulled a backpack found floating nearby from the river, the station adds.

"So I handed the phone to her and got the baby".

According to police, an officer brought the baby onto the pedestrian walkway and administered CPR. He said the baby had no respiration and showed no pulse.

Police say it wasn't immediately clear why the child was in the water, and no parent or guardian was present.

He had went into the water "mid-thigh level", AP reports, to retrieve the baby and started CPR.

The location near the South Street Seaport on the heavily-trafficked East River, a tidal estuary subject to strong currents, divides Manhattan from Brooklyn. The Medical Examiner is working to determine the baby's cause of death.
