Beckham caught up in terrifying natural disaster that left scores dead

At least 105 people were killed and 230 were injured in the magnitude 6.9 quake, which hit the tourist island of Lombok on Sunday night.

Quake-stricken residents of Lombok island in central Indonesia are reeling from two powerful earthquakes that struck the island in just a week, as a search-and-rescue operation was under way to look for more casualties trapped under the debris of collapsed buildings.

For many, food and water remains in short supply and people are afraid to return to their homes - that is if they are still standing.

Rescuers resumed their search for survivors‚ and started the recovery of bodies in the rubble of houses‚ mosques and schools after the most recent quake.

Local authorities said Monday that the official death toll from Sunday's massive natural disaster in Indonesia has climbed to at least 142, and more than two hundred people were injured.

He told a news conference that reports of other deaths still needed to be verified.

The death toll since the 6.9 magnitude quake on Sunday has reached 98, including two on the neighboring island of Bali, and officials expect it to rise.

But the rescuers and heavy equipment were, "very much needed elsewhere, so we made a decision to shift the operation" to other locations, Mr Supartana said. Guntur said the food truck had been effective, practical and economical for tourists, noting that its existence will be evaluated for future use.

There was no official figure for how many tourists were on the islands, with numbers jumping from an original estimate of about 1,000. "Clean drinking water is scarce due to the extremely dry weather".

Makeshift encampments have popped up on the side of roads and rice fields, with many farmers reluctant to move far from their damaged homes and leave precious livestock behind.

"President Jokowi promised that government will assist with 50 million rupiah [about $4600] for each house flattened, but we don't know when that will be".

"It took many hours but we're thankful it worked and this person was found alive". "He asked me for help, but I couldn't help him, we just ran to help ourselves", Johriah, who like many Indonesians goes by one name, told AFP tearfully.

Nugroho added that all 2,700 foreign and domestic tourists have been evacuated from Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air, the three tourist islets off the northwestern coast of Lombok after nine boats were deployed to transport them to the mainland.

In December 2004, a massive magnitude 9.1 quake off Sumatra triggered a tsunami that killed 230,000 people in a dozen countries.

He added 80 percent of buildings had been damaged or destroyed.

Thousands of people are trying to evacuate after a powerful quake hit the Indonesian island of Lombok and shook nearby Bali last night.

Like Bali, Lombok is known for its pristine beaches and mountains.

Lombok lies on the Ring of Fire, a belt surrounding the Pacific Ocean that is especially prone to earthquakes and volcanoes.

Lombok airport's general manager said airlines had laid on extra flights and his staff had been providing blankets and snacks.
