Zsa Zsa, the world's ugliest dog, dies days after winning competition

Zsa Zsa's owner Megan Brainard confirmed she passed peacefully in her sleep Monday night, according to Today. He says she appeared fine the day before, so it was a shock.

The English Bulldog was crowned "World's Ugliest Dog" at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Petaluma, California several weeks ago. "Sweetest dog I've ever met".

The nine-year-old Zsa Zsa came from a hardscrabble background, spending five years in a puppy mill in the U.S. state of Missouri and being sold at auction before she attained ugliest dog immortality.

Luckily the dog was given a proper farewell, with Brainard sharing that she, her husband and their 15-month-old daughter said their goodbyes earlier today.

The world's ugliest dog, Zsa Zsa, has passed away, Today reports.

The English Bulldog's lolling tongue and crooked underbite helped her win the title in June.

Zsa Zsa was truly a thing of beauty.

"From the moment we saw her attractive face, we knew we would be her forever home", Brainard said last month after the big win. She said her family held a small memorial for the pooch, known to love Slim Jims and burritos from the Mexican fast-food chain Chipotle. "She never really showed much excitement but yes, she was definitely living it up after she won".

While mean-spirited in name, the contest promotes advocacy and adoption for all dogs, regardless of how mangy the mutts may be.
