Uruguay beat Cristiano Ronaldo's Portugal in World Cup last 16

Ronaldo got off to a hot start to the 2018 tournament by doubling his career World Cup goal total from three to six thanks to a hat trick against Spain in the opener.

Honestly speaking, I believe that Lionel Messi is not being treated fairly.

Portugal winger Gelson Martins and left-back Raphael Guerreiro are in contention to play after they returned to full training.

Copa America Centenario 2016Not prone to showing his emotions, Messi sobbed uncontrollably after blasting his penalty over the bar as Argentina lost a second Copa America final in as many years in a shootout to Chile.

Whether he can break through against Uruguay will determine Ronaldo's World Cup legacy. It's hard because France have the players but I have to say them.

Argentina battled into the last 16 in Russian Federation, needing a dramatic 2-1 win over Nigeria to clinch second spot in Group D with their first victory of the tournament. Against Iceland and Croatia, Argentina had been nearly unwatchably sterile: their midfield is perhaps lower in quality than any that has represented the country in two decades and there are certainly few players available to Sampaoli who can supply Messi with possession frequently. Take Lionel Messi out of the game and the Argentinian side becomes dysfunctional. Obviously I would love to win the World Cup.

Additionally, one could also suggest that their chances of glory have even been improved considering the elimination of an opponent that has been responsible for their downfall in each edition of the tournament since that the Germans themselves hosted in 2006.

We know Messi is great but we're confused and sad for him.

One journalist approached the 31-year-old forward to ask about a good luck charm that was gifted to Messi earlier in the tournament. The imperceptible influenced a mountain of situations that made the inferior team to Argentina win the world championship.

"Well, I remember that point in time, but everything I mentioned to the players is personal and I don't think it's for the public domain, it was a simple exchange I had with a player", Sampaoli said. And before the potential Ronaldo-Messi clash, there are some intriguing individual battles as sub-plots in Saturday's matches. Thus, when accompanied with Blaise Matuidi, France become an extremely tiresome team which relies on counterattacks. Until now France have had to play teams who do not want the ball, teams who want to defend. You can see how hard it has been for every team.

Defending champion Germany was knocked out of the World Cup in shocking fashion. Sure, the team let in six goals against England and had a style of defending set pieces that would not have looked out of place on a wrestling mat, but just look at the joy created by their goal!

Right when it appeared the defending champs were done, Toni Kroos saved their World Cup. albeit momentarily.
