Tesla has met its Model 3 production goals

However, Tesla was forced to build a makeshift tent containing a production line comprised of spare parts in order to reach this goal. That's a critical threshold: Once an automaker hits that number of electric-vehicle deliveries, the $7,500 federal tax credit begins to ratchet down and phase out over subsequent quarters.

Just last week, Tesla invited all Model 3 reservation holders in the United States and Canada to configure their vehicle and put in their order, a step that costs another $US2,500.

"I think we just became a real auto company. thank you for your hard work and dedication". During the second quarter, however, Tesla dug deep in order to overcome its production challenges, with the company resorting to unusual solutions, such as air-freighting robots from Europe and setting up a new assembly line in a sprung structure, in order to improve its chances of attaining its Q2 0218 production goals. Instead, they built a giant tent in just two weeks.

Tesla Inc. (NasdaqGS: TSLA)'s been on an undeniable tear.

"The level of dedication and creativity was mind-blowing", Musk said in the email. Tesla's stock is up about three percent in the wake of the announcement. Over time he expects it to rise, though.

Consumer Edge Research Senior Analyst Jamie Albertine takes a more bullish view. "I don't believe their goal was to simply hit 5,000 a week and somehow revert to a lower production rate in the future", Albertine said. He even shipped an extra battery production line in from Germany, which Tesla put under a tent.

Field came to Tesla in 2013 as a vice president of vehicle programs after a five-year stint in hardware engineering at Apple. Tesla also reiterated guidance for GAAP profits and positive cash flow in the second and third quarters.

It would also be consistent with Tesla's historical pattern. Tesla "expects that number to grow faster than the production rate When we start to provide customers an opportunity to see and test drive the vehicle at their local store". Remaining net Model 3 reservations as of the end of Q2 2018 stood at roughly 420,000, despite Tesla having delivered 28,386 Model 3 vehicles to date. That was responsible for around 20-percent of the Model 3 produced in the final week. The company hasn't said when it will start producing the $35,000 version. The report said Musk had pushed aside Field to assume control of the Model 3 production process.

Investors will now be eager to ascertain whether Tesla can consistently manufacture such a high volume of cars over a longer time frame. The company said it expects to make 6,000 per week by late next month.

Musk told investors on a first-quarter earnings conference call that the company relied too heavily on automation. Couldn't be more proud to work with you.
