Man with world's longest fingernails grabs the clippers after 66 years

His cut fingernails are laid flat in a memorial case and span a length of over 31 feet, the height of a three-story building, according to a statement by Ripley's. Born in 1938, Chillal began growing nails on his left hand in 1952 after a teacher beat him up for breaking his nail.

They were only fingernails, but to Shridhar Chillal, cutting them off probably felt a bit like cutting off his own hand.

"It was a very hard decision for me to cut my nails, but when I realised after cutting them they'd be at Ripley's Believe it or Not, and the museum is going to maintain them ... then I felt like I was making the right decision, and that's when I chose to cut my nails".

Shridhar Chillal, an octogenarian from India, had the world's longest fingernails measuring over 9 metres! He said that his last wish was for him to get compensation with his cut nail exhibit since he was not able to earn much with his long fingernails.

While Chillal holds the world record for longest fingernails on one hand, the current record for longest nails on both hands goes to Ayanna Williams of Houston, Texas, reported HuffPost.

When asked by Guinness World Records in 2015 how his nails affect his life, Shridhar said they were extremely fragile and he needed to take care when sleeping. I spent 66 years of my life on my nails.

"But when I realised that after cutting my nails, my nails will be at Ripley's Believe It or Not! and they're going to maintain it very nicely and for a lifetime, then I felt like I was doing the right decision and that's why I chose to cut my nails". He had made it to the the Guinness Book of World Records in 2016 for having the "Longest Fingernails on a Single Hand Ever". Due to years of growing his nails and their weight, his left hand is permanently handicapped; he can not open his hand from a closed position or flex his fingers. They together stretched about 30 feet, or the length of a bus, before he finally had them cut on Wednesday. "Times Square", Ripley's Believe It or Not!
