Liverpool defender Lovren: Modric deserves Ballon d'Or

Dejan Lovren called for more recognition of his talents after he helped Croatia to a World Cup semi-final victory over England, describing himself as "one of the best defenders in the world".

He was also integral to Liverpool's run to the Champions League final in May, but although Klopp was full of praise for the 29-year-old he also said there is still room for improvement.

Coming just seven weeks after Liverpool's defeat by Real Madrid in Kiev, Lovren has used it to hit back at his critics.

The Liverpool player has asked everyone to show him some respect after his last achievements both in club and worldwide level.

"I heard people saying I had a hard season but I don't agree with that", the 29-year-old told BeIN SPORTS.

I showed why I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League and now with the national team, and now I'm in the World Cup final.

"Without being arrogant, I think I have proved to be one of the best defenders in the world".

Lovren also called for Croatia team-mate Luka Modric to receive the highest individual award in world football, the Ballon d'Or.

Lovren further lamented the semi-final defeat to France in the 1998 World Cup, though he now believes the disappointment from two decades ago has now been put to rest by reaching the final in Russian Federation 2018. People will never forget us. This is something historic for us. "People are crying in our country", he added. We beat our record of 20 years ago and we had it on our shoulders all the time, this weight. "Now we have a chance to do something even better".

However, Lovren believes that his achievements confirm that he is among the world's best players in his position.

Croatia face a tough task against France in their first World Cup final on Sunday.
