Goleta Devastated by Brush Fire as Record Heat Burns Path of Destruction

Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol had asked the Oregon Department of Transportation to stop all traffic heading south on Interstate 5 near Ashland after the fire began.

Meanwhile, a wildfire on the California-Oregon border has destroyed 40 buildings in Hornbrook and claimed at least one life.

The Associated Press reported that it was unclear how numerous destroyed buildings were homes rather than garages, barns and other buildings in the rural area of about 250 people.

The fire is one of several that erupted Friday as temperatures topped 100 degrees in many Southern California areas and embers ignited tinder-dry brush.

Multiple structures are threatened, damaged or destroyed, Brady said.

Tricky high winds made the blaze hard to coral as it burned down close to a dozen homes - while leaving some nearby structures unharmed.

CalFire reported the Klamathon Fire at 8,000+ acres as of 6:oo Friday morning, with 5 percent containment.

Governor Jerry Brown on Friday declared a state of emergency for San Diego County due to the wildfires. The Holiday Fire has scorched about 35 acres and prompted the evacuation of about 2,500 people in Goleta, county officials said.

Hundreds of homes have been evacuated.

Wildfires burned through Southern and Central California on Friday, prompting mandatory evacuations as areas across the region experienced record-breaking heat. "We know we've lost homes and lots of structures, including livestock and horses as well".

The fire is now zero percent contained and is "fast-moving", Eliason said. Almost 2,500 people in the Cathedral Oaks neighborhood are evacuated. But the threat of a deluge raised the possibility of flooding at a stubborn blaze in the southwestern corner of the state. They said it was just smoldering, and rain over the coming days should keep it from spreading.

Officials on Saturday opened up the burned out area near a popular fishing lake 80 miles (130 kilometers) southeast of Salt Lake City, as well as a stretch of highway.

Firefighters in Santa Barbara County were battling a new "fast-moving and wind-driven" blaze Friday night.
