Girl killed while looking for help after surviving dad's drunk-driving crash

DeSandra Thomas was riding in her father's auto when he crashed into an abandoned vehicle along I-94 in Romulus, Mich., lost control and flew off the highway and through a fence, according to Michigan State Police.

Michigan State Police Lt. Mike Shaw said the father lost control of the vehicle and ran off the roadway. "Somewhere along the line she learned call 911 if you are in trouble and she did just that".

The 7-year-old girl was in the vehicle at the time of the crash, Shaw said.

The girl's lifeless body was later discovered lying in the center median, less than 150 feet away from her father's wrecked vehicle.

Sandria was at work Sunday morning when police delivered the news that her daughter was killed. Police said the girl was looking for help after her father crashed their auto into an abandoned vehicle near Merriman around 3:30 a.m. Sunday. The driver who struck Thomas and called 911 was questioned by police and released. Shaw told WDIV that the child's father appeared "very intoxicated" at the scene and that he had to be helped out of the vehicle. Police were unable to locate Thomas even after pinging the cellphone.

Michigan State Police became involved about 3:35 a.m., responding to a woman who thought she had hit a pedestrian, but when troopers arrived to the area of I-94 and Inkster, they could not find anyone.

The crash investigation prompted police to close eastbound I-94 near Detroit Metro Airport for a period of time Sunday morning. “Unfortunately, as she was crossing I-94 she was struck by the vehicle.”. Her mom whose been notified has lost her child.

They continued looking for her. "And there's somebody that's going to drive around the rest of their life knowing that they were involved in a traffic crash that killed a 7-year-old girl".

He's in police custody, with charges pending. The woman who hit the girl was released. She is not expected to be charged.

The mother continued: "She was a lovely thing, she was on her way to the third grade. This 7-year-old won't get to go to her wedding, won't go to a prom, won't graduate from high school because of poor decisions".
