EPA chief Scott Pruitt resigns amid various ethics scandals

Now EPA Deputy Administrator Andrew Wheeler will fill in while the president finds a new leader for the agency. He said Wheeler is a lobbyist who went "to bat for the very industries he's now being asked to regulate". "But let's not forget he was carrying out President Trump's policies". The EPA also confirmed that Pruitt's security detail joined him on first-class flights, contributing to the high costs of his travel.

"It is extremely hard for me to cease serving you in this role first because I count it as a blessing to be serving you in any capacity, but also because of the transformative work that is occurring", he wrote in his resignation letter obtained by Fox News.

President Trump announced and accepted Thursday the resignation of Scott Pruitt as administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency.

His chief of staff signed on his behalf approving large raises for two of his close aides, and sources say Multiple senior EPA officials were demoted after they raised concerns about Pruitt's spending.

Pruitt "had hinted at that (sic) some sort of conversation had taken place between he and the president", Dravis told congressional investigators, according to a transcript obtained Thursday by the AP.

In his resignation letter, Pruitt cited "the unrelenting attacks" that were taking a toll on him and his family. Pruitt, a former Oklahoma attorney general, is often aligned with the oil and gas industry, while Wheeler has focused more on coal since becoming a lobbyist a decade ago.

Though Trump promised he would drain the swamp when he took over the White House, Pruitt set new swampy records in town, which is saying a lot. Environmental groups expressed dismay when he joined the federal agency, and Pruitt has since sought to roll back various environmental regulations, including Obama-era auto emission standards.

"Despite his brief tenure, Pruitt was the worst EPA chief in history", said Kieran Suckling, executive director of the Center for Biological Diversity.

Pallone last month accused Pruitt's EPA of "betraying the bipartisan effort" that led to passage led to a law updating federal chemical regulations and was named for the late U.S. Sen.

Over the past few months, Pruitt has become somewhat of a political liability for the Trump administration, drawing the scrutiny of federal investigators and even prompting criticism from the EPA's ethics officer Kevin Minoli.

The praise for Pruitt was far from universal. "Americans will not tolerate another EPA administrator whose primary goal is to fight the core mission of the EPA".
