Croatia ends Russia’s run, advances to World Cup semifinals

As well, the same selection landed when Croatia beat Russian Federation 3-1 just over two years ago in their last meeting and makes this 11/1 (12.0) shot a tempting play ahead of the last quarter-final of this World Cup.

Croatia ended Russia's unlikely World Cup dream when they won 4-3 on penalties to eliminate the gallant hosts after a dramatic quarter-final ended 2-2 after extra time on Saturday.

Croatia's Domagoj Vida broke the deadlock in extra-time, getting his head to the ball from a corner to score in the 101st minute but Fernandes headed home from a free-kick just five minutes before the end in Sochi.

Russian Federation have restored left-winger Denis Cheryshev to the team to face Croatia in the World Cup quarter-final on Saturday.

Croatia's Dejan Lovren and team mates celebrate winning the penalty shootout.

Croatia hadn't advanced this far at the World Cup since the 1998 World Cup, which was its first appearance.

Both goalkeepers made early saves in the shootout, with an injured Danijel Subasic stopping the opening shot from Fyodor Smolov. The Croatians lost to France in the semis 20 years ago.

His hero status, however, lasted all of 20 minutes as he missed a decisive penalty in the shootout, allowing Ivan Rakitic to step up and slot home the victor.

Ivan Rakitic, so often a key man for Barcelona, was not almost as influential as at club level, while in defense, Russia's Mario Fernandes beat more highly rated defenders to head home a late equalizer.

"We should have finished the job before penalties but maybe it's written in the stars we have to go through the extra drama", said Luka Modric, whose penalty bounced off Akinfeev's hand and the post before entering the other side of the net.
