Angelique Kerber Beats Serena Williams to Win Wimbledon Championship

Germany's Angelique Kerber returns the ball to US player Serena Williams during their women's singles final match on the day 12 of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships at All England Lawn Tennis Club in London, July 14, 2018.

Williams, just 10 months after giving birth, was on her sport's biggest stage, two sets away from winning the most prestigious title in tennis, when she got worked over by Angelique Kerber, 6-3, 6-3. For Serena, surpassing Margaret Court (24 grand slam titles) and making more history at Wimbledon will have to wait, despite that she still had an awesome run given her return from pregnancy just a few weeks previously.

"I look forward to it".

Serena Williams of U.S appears dejected during the Ladies' Singles final against Angelique Kerber of Germany on day 12 of the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Championships at All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club on July 14, 2018 in London.

It was two hours later than scheduled before the women's final got underway, but Williams was adamant the decision to play the men's match first wasn't disrespectful and didn't affect her performance.

As Kerber held the Venus Rosewater Dish after her dominating 6-3, 6-3 victory over Serena Williams, no doubt her mind will have floated back to their previous meeting on the very same court and the tumultuous journey her career has been on since.

She was bidding to become only the fourth mum to win a Grand Slam title in the professional era and the first at Wimbledon since Evonne Goolagong beat Chris Evert in 1980.

Kerber was so consistent. "Congrats again for coming back". "Obviously I can compete for the long run in a Grand Slam", the 36-year-old American continued. Honestly, I feel like if I can do it, they can do it.

Williams admitted this time may be more hard, not least because she gave birth just 10 months ago, and has spoken about the tough delivery, which left her in hospital for six weeks.

"I honestly felt I would have done better in some of the earlier tournaments".

Meghan rocked her signature "messy bun" hair style and looked chic in a striped blue-and-white shirt and wide-leg cream pant by Ralph Lauren, while Kate wore a white patterned dress.

"Almost didn't make it, to be honest", Williams said shortly after completing her 6-2, 6-4 semifinal victory over 13th-seeded Julia Goerges on Thursday.

Serena Williams has never played tennis just for herself.

However, she was caught on camera looking deflated following Serena's defeat by Angelique.
