US, North Korean Representatives to Meet in Singapore on Monday - White House

Both US President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un are due to arrive in Singapore on Sunday.

They are scheduled to meet on Tuesday on the resort island of Sentosa.

Singaporean media reported that he had arrived at 2.38 p.m. local time (0738 UTC) on Sunday.

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said last week that progress was being made in bringing the two sides together in their understanding of denuclearisation.

North Korea, many experts believe, stands on the brink of being able to target the entire USA mainland with its nuclear-armed missiles, and while there's deep skepticism that Kim will quickly give up those hard-won nukes, there's also some hope that diplomacy can replace the animosity between the US and the North.

Despite the White House's "maximum pressure" campaign, the North remained defiant and carried out its sixth nuclear test in September 2017.

"Kim Jong Un is revered as a god-like being in his country, while outside the North, he's been subject to hostility because of the way his regime is run, and that's enough to always cause safety concerns for his officials", said Chae. Kim appears especially interested in getting rid of worldwide sanctions that are hampering his country's economic growth.

Despite the high stakes for the meeting, Trump has said that he would know within seconds of the start of the talks whether Kim was serious about abandoning nuclear weapons.

"I think within the first minute I'll know". "I feel they were trying to intimidate me, but if I got deported it would have been big news".

A USA official says Monday that the leaders will meet for up to two hours before an expanded bilateral meeting with their respective advisers.

On May 10, Trump announced he would hold a summit with Kim in Singapore and has since indicated he would try to reach an agreement to formally end the 1950-53 Korean War. "I very much look forward to it", he said.

"I'm not ready to give an authorization for the use of military force to this president or any other one until I understand that the path for peace is not attainable", he said. "But he's also going into the summit with his eyes wide open". That is particularly true in the era of President Trump, who is seen as an uncertain partner even for Washington's existing Asian allies.

Will Mr. Trump talk about human rights abuses?

More unsettling for him is the news from Air Force One. The government controls all aspects of the economy, the media and the political process.

The pair - dressed in identical black suits, with lapel badges showing former North Korean leaders and flanked by Singapore police - were busy getting into the best position for Kim's arrival, setting up cameras in the middle of the road.

There are also signs that South Korea, China and Russian Federation are preparing to increase economic ties with North Korea, should a nuclear deal be reached.
