Memphis woman seen letting young girl out of pet kennel

Leimome Cheeks has been arrested and charged on two counts of child endangerment following the shocking incident, that took place on Saturday evening close to Elvis Presley's famous Graceland mansion.

Many have inquired about a viral video from Saturday that shows two children being transported in pet kennels in the.

Fox 13 Memphis interviewed one of Cheeks' neighbors who said she thinks the grandmother didn't have bad intentions. Cheeks admitted to police that she had driven with the kids at least 35 minutes in 95-degree heat that day as she ran errands.

Authorities responded to a call about a woman transporting children in dog kennels and, while investigating at a house in Whitehaven, Cheeks drove up to the home, according to an affidavit of complaint. I couldn't see her actually doing that.

The children told police there wasn't much air in the kennels and they were very hot.

Cheeks recently brought the kennels for her two puppies.

Officers saw that the children were no longer inside the kennels but were seated in the back seat, the affidavit said.

One neighbor told Local 24 it was "very sad because it feels like hell right here now, it's very hot".

Once arrested a day later, Cheeks told cops that she put the kids in the kennels because she had run out of space in the auto.

"I mean it could be an honest mistake".

"Despicable", Sonrisa Schweddy wrote on Memphis Police Department's Facebook announcement of Cheek's arrest. "It's a huge mistake, get some help yeah but put her in jail, it's hard to say", he added.

The children are OK, according to police, but the same can't be said for Leimome Cheeks.

Cheeks is expected to appear in court Monday morning. The woman is being held at the Shelby County Jail.
