Marcus Rashford linked with very unexpected move from Man Utd this summer

England, whose manager Gareth Southgate made 10 changes from the side which beat Nigeria 2-1 at Wembley on Saturday, dominated possession against a mostly unadventurous Costa Rica side, but they created few clear chances.

Captain Harry Kane is inked in at centre forward, Marcus Rashford's blockbuster strike on Thursday did his cause no harm at all and Jamie Vardy's pace offers another option.

Tasked with leading the line Rashford, partner-in-crime Jamie Vardy was almost in for a second but was well thwarted by Navas. Principal among them was the scorer of the first goal, Marcus Rashford.

It was a welcome boost for the European champions, who hadn't won since March and were held to draws by Tunisia (2-2) and Belgium (0-0) in their previous two friendlies.

FORMER York City keeper Nick Pope has expressed his "immense pride" at making his global debut - and believes the mood in the England camp is "great" following injury-free World Cup preparations.

Stones started in the middle of Gareth Southgate's preferred back three between Harry Maguire and Phil Jones and was only troubled once in an assured display before being replaced by Gary Cahill in the 65th minute.

The England coach chose to take his players out of London for their last pre-World Cup warm-up game and by engaging with Yorkshire he re-engaged Leeds with a national set-up which rarely concerns them.

The England global is an established player in the United first team, but the 20-year-old has not started as many matches as he would have liked under manager Jose Mourinho.

He said: "If you look at Sterling, he gives the ball away a bit more in easy positions and I think Rashford plays better in an England shirt". Rashford has given Southgate a massive selection dilemma ahead of the first group game against Tunisia.

Who could Rashford replace? If Alli comes out of the side, that would leave just Jesse Lingard alongside Eric Dier or Jordan Henderson in midfield, something which is unlikely to happen.

Rashford's eighth-minute dribble past Waston was a thing of wonder; its true majesty only revealed by replays.

"You can see that a lot of the lads are confident".

Though perhaps a better problem to have than others experienced by England managers in recent years, the performance presents something of a quandary for Southgate, posing the hard question: should Rashford start over Manchester City's Raheem Sterling? "Today he had that exuberance and was teasing defenders".
