John Beilein says he's staying with MI basketball

Beilein, 65, tweeted that he's "excited" to coach Michigan's men's basketball team "next season and in the years to come!"

The Pistons reportedly met with former Milwaukee Bucks coach Jason Kiddthis past weekend and there were reports about the franchise also interviewing Juwan Howard and Kenny Smith. He has led MI to the National Championship Game twice, including in the 2017-18 season when the Wolverines rattled off five straight NCAA Tournament wins before falling to Villanova.

John Beilein will be coaching MI, not the Detroit Pistons, next season.

Beilein has worked continuously as a college head coach since 1978, with stops at a variety of schools before landing at MI in 2007. He has guided the Wolverines to two Big Ten titles, eight NCAA tournament appearances and two national runner-up finishes.

Long considered one of college basketball's top offensive minds, Beilein is 799-461 in 39 seasons. Beilein, who is from Burt, New York, also made Division I stops at Canisius, Richmond and West Virginia before moving to MI.

"It became very clear to me where I was meant to finish coaching", Beilein told the Free Press.
