John Beilein: ‘I was meant to finish coaching’ at MI

John Beilein is staying at MI after exploring the possibility of coaching the Detroit Pistons. And he has no intention of leaving Ann Arbor before retiring.

John Beilein, the head coach of the University of MI men's basketball team, tweeted Wednesday that he's excited about coaching for U of M for years to come. His current contract runs through the 2020-21 season, paying him $3.37 million annually, with a new extension expected in the coming days.

On Thursday, the 65-year-old Beilein told Nick Baumgardner of the Detroit Free Press that he intends to finish his coaching career at MI. He said Beilein pulled himself from consideration after speaking separately with Gores and Detroit management personnel.

Beilein is under contract with MI through the 2020-21 season, a deal that pays him $3.37 million annually, but he and the school have been in discussions about a contract extension.

"I don't want John Beilein to coach anywhere else and he knows that", Manuel said last month.

Beilein's revised contract at MI was in the works prior to his discussions with the Pistons.

That means one year will be added to Beilein's deal after each season - essentially making it a lifetime contract to stay at the University of MI.
