Local media said Ms Zorreguieta, a psychologist, had struggled with depression.

Buenos Aires-born Maxima had a close relationship with her youngest sister, who was bridesmaid at her wedding to then Crown Prince Willem-Alexander in 2002.

The queen's father, Jorge Zorreguieta, died in 2017 at the age of 89 due to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

The death of 33-year-old Ines Zorreguieta, in an apparent suicide, was confirmed by Trudy Hulscher of the Royal House's communications department.

The queen, an Argentine, landed on a Dutch KLM flight accompanied by her husband King Willem-Alexander and their three daughters.

He added: 'The sudden passing away of Queen Maxima's sister comes as a great shock.

In "Gender differences and their relation to suicide and related behaviors", Zorreguieta examined why women take their own lives.

Police said the autopsy report would be available in a week but did not suspect foul play. She was godmother to the royal couple's youngest daughter, Princess Ariane, 11. It is intensely sad and heartbreaking news that can hardly be comprehended by those who stay behind.

'I wish them all the strength they need to cope with this awful loss.

Queen Maxima, 47, has reportedly cancelled all of her upcoming engagements and is due to fly to her native Argentina later today.

Between 2009 and 2011 she worked at the United Nations headquarters of Panama but returned to Argentina in 2012 after a breakup.

Jorge Zorreguieta worked as agriculture minister during Argentina's brutal military dictatorship.
