Five dead following Border Patrol auto chase in Texas

Fox News reports a tragic scene unfolded this afternoon near the Texas-Mexican border as "12 people were ejected from an SUV carrying illegal immigrants after it crashed following a high-speed chase with U.S. Border Patrol vehicles".

In a later interview, Boyd said the vehicle reached 100 miles per hour before the driver lost control and crashed.

The Texas Department of Public Safety said the driver lost control of the SUV and it rolled, causing the deaths and injuries.

Thee were 14 people in the vehicle, including the driver and a passenger who were both US citizens.

He said a Border Patrol agent initiated the pursuit before a unit for the sheriff's office took over. He said at least one and possibly two others died at a hospital.

The accident happened before noon Sunday off Highway 85 in Big Wells, about 130 miles southwest of San Antonio.

Officials said four of the immigrants died in the crash, while nine others were injured.

"I think we need a wall, in my opinion", he said, voicing support for President Donald Trump's proposal to construct a border wall with Mexico.

"We've seen this many, many times and not only in this county but other counties along the border", he said.

When asked why Border Patrol agents started the chase, Boyd said, "It's called good police work".
