Father of Irish champion Katie Taylor shot at boxing club

It's believed at least one man entered the building and fired a number of shots.

The shooting took place outside the Bray Boxing Club on Harbour Road at around 6.55am on Tuesday morning.

Pete Taylor, the father and former trainer of Katie Taylor, was shot Tuesday during an attack at the boxing gym he runs in Ireland.

The shooting has left a 30 year-old man dead.

A statement from the boxing gym on Facebook said they would miss Mr Messit, a dedicated member for eight years, dearly.

Gardai said the body of the man remains at the scene before the arrival of the state pathologist.

"Following examination of CCTV in the area, we now wish to appeal for information for a silver coloured Volkswagen Caddy with Northern Irish plates".

He said: "We are not giving out full details of the injuries received - what we can say is they are not life threatening".

'The gym is council-owned and it is operated by Pete Taylor, who is Katie's dad'.

"Another dark day for Bray".

Ireland's Health Minister Simon Harris called the news from Bray "shocking". "I have no doubt that the Gardai are doing all they can to apprehend those responsible".

She went on to win gold at London 2012 with her father in her corner but now works in the U.S. under different management.

He is an Irish senior light heavyweight boxing champion, winning the title for Ireland in 1986.

The club was where Katie Taylor - an Olympic, European and world champion - began her career. Taylor turned pro after losing at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro and is no longer trained by her father.
