Dutch queen's sister dies in Argentina

Buenos Aires-born Maxima had a close relationship with her youngest sister, who was bridesmaid at her wedding to then Crown Prince Willem-Alexander in 2002.

"The sudden death of Queen Máxima's sister comes as a big shock". In 2010, while she attended the University of Belgrano in Buenos Aires, Zorreguieta wrote a thesis centered on suicide in order to receive her psychology degree. A Dutch official told NOS TV it appeared that Zorreguieta killed herself.

The queen and her sister are native Argentinians. Zorreguieta was also godmother to the couple's third child, her 11-year-old niece Princess Ariane of the Netherlands.

Zorreguieta was a psychologist who worked on social policies at the office of Argentina's president, Mauricio Macri.

"With our hearts and our thoughts we are with the queen and her family". She has since canceled her forthcoming engagements including a state visit to Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania next week.

Inés and Maxima's father, Jorge Zorreguieta, died past year.

The royal house said that the Queen is "very shocked and very sad" by the news.

He had served as agriculture minister during Argentina's brutal military dictatorship - a link that caused some controversy in the Netherlands, and led to a debate in the Dutch parliament, before his daughter married the crown prince.

She is said to have worked as a civil servant in Buenos Aires.
