David Spade Mourns Sister-in-Law Kate Spade's Death

Kate Spade, 55, was found in her Park Avenue apartment by her housekeeping staff, they reported.

Andy Spade said his wife Kate was seeking help for anxiety and depression in the lead up to her death.

"We loved Kate dearly and will miss her terribly", Kate's family said in a statement to to the New York Daily News. There was no indication and no warning that she would do this.

He said her death was a "complete shock".

Cops were unclear as to why Spade, who became a fashion sensation a decade ago, would have taken her own life.

"Now would you really go into someone else's office and say, 'Hey, hey, hey, hey, I've got to tell you something?' No, you'd say, 'Call me when you have a second.' So I've had to learn to be as respectful".

Andy Spade's statement comes after Kate's older sister spoke to The Kansas City Star, claiming family members had urged her to seek inpatient treatment for her mental illness.

Andy Spade called his wife the kindest person he knew and said he can not fathom life without her.

"We were best friends trying to work through our problems in the best way we knew how", it adds. She was the kindest person I've ever known and my best friend for 35 years. There was no substance or alcohol abuse. Her brother-in-law, David Spade, tweeted a picture of her at his book signing and said: "I love this pic of her". A note was found nearby, but the contents of the note are not public right now. After she sold the company, she made so much money, Kate could retreat.

While many remember Kate Spade for her fashion empire, the designer hoped it wouldn't be her only lasting legacy.

Spade also referenced media reports of a suicide note that had been reportedly left by his late wife.

Spade leaves behind her daughter, Frances Beatrix Spade, 13, and her husband Andy Spade, 55. "And I said, honey, you just don't start a handbag company".

"There was a moment when you couldn't walk a block in NY without seeing one of her bags, which were just like her; colourful and unpretentious", Wintour said in a statement.

Media captionWhat is Kate Spade's legacy?

"She was exceedingly kind, beautifully sensitive, insanely talented, amusing as heck and one of the most generous people I have ever know". It was probably drinking too much, it was longing for a world that didn't exist anymore... "This was someone that really valued her private life and I don't think Kate could live in the cruel world that we live in today".

If you or someone you know is having suicidal thoughts, help is available.
