Runciman said four of the 24 patients sent to hospital were believed to have life-threatening injuries.

There were 37 people on the bus, which is painted with a logo for Union Tour Express company from MA. According to police, four passengers suffered life threatening injuries and twenty other passengers sustained non-life threatening injuries.

A communications official with the company said, "We can confirm we are responding to reports of a single multi-passenger vehicle into a ditch".

They all spoke Mandarin and needed translators, McIntyre said, adding she was not sure of their nationality.

The Chinese Embassy said on Twitter that it was "very concerned" about the condition of the injured passengers and is now working together with the canadian authorities. A dash cam photo of the scene he shared showed at least three ambulances and first responders, with about half a dozen people standing at the side of the road.

Two ORNGE air ambulances, one plane, and several ground ambulances were rushed to the scene, said ORNGE spokesman Joshua McNamara.

Westbound lanes of Highway 401 have been closed west of Prescott, between Edward St. and Maitland Rd. "What I've been advised is that we have received five of the most critical".

The paramedics also tweeted that 20 ambulatory patients were being taken to Kemptville District Hospital for further assessment via school bus.
