Mormon church to end 105-year relationship with the Boy Scouts

Mormon church to end 105-year relationship with the Boy Scouts

In another statement Tuesday, the church encouraged members to continue their participation and financial support of the Scouts until the relationship ends in December 2019.

The announcement comes just six days after the BSA said they will drop the word "boy" from the name of their older youth program to help make sure "all youth are welcome", including girls. Mormons account for about 19 percent of BSA's membership, adding about 2.3 million members to the rolls.

"We've had a great partnership with the church for 105 years and losing that membership is sad for us", said Mark Griffin, scout executive for the Great Salt Lake Council. Mormon Church leaders considered parting ways with the organization.

The only difference is that the boys started on their achievements six months ago, so the girls who recently joined have to work twice as fast as the boys so they can reach their achievements at the same time as the boys.

"It's reprehensible that the Boy Scouts of America has hired lobbyists to kill legislation that would help the adult survivors of child sexual abuse, " said Brad Hoylman, a Democratic state senator in NY who sponsored such a bill.

In the last couple years, the boy scouts have opened their doors to welcome a more diverse group into the program.

Church officials attributed its changing needs to its increasingly global membership - more than half of the church's 16 million members live outside the US and Canada.

Robison, who is also a part of the latter day saints church, said any young man who is part of a Mormon congregation automatically becomes part of the Boy Scouts. The Mormon church, vocally opposed to gay marriage like many other religions, responded by noting that the church was "deeply troubled" by the move. The name of the organization is not changing.

"This is my opinion, but I don't think they will totally leave the Boy Scouts of America because this is a generational program", he said.

Girl Scouts of Montana and Wyoming (GSMW) says it's "proudly keeping the "girl" in Girl Scouts", and reasserting its commitment to "providing an all-girl, girl-led, and girl-friendly environment", according to a release from their office.

The group retained lobbyists in Georgia and NY, where lawmakers say such action helped stall proposals that included "lookback" windows allowing adults to take legal action over decades-old claims.

Seamus Thurston, 13, submits information for his personal fitness merit badge, his last needed before submitting for the Eagle Scout rank, to Paula Bergeson.

Nevertheless, creating their own scouting equivalent will allow them to define and apply those values independent of the BSA's changing views.
