Madhya Pradesh issues advisory on Nipah virus

In the year 2007, most of the people from Bangladesh suffered from this incurable disease by drinking raw date palm sap that the fruit bat had also contaminated.

Nipah virus (NiV) infection is a newly-emerging zoonosis that causes severe disease in animals and humans.

Telangana Director of Medical Education K. Ramesh Reddy said samples of two persons were sent to National Institute of Virology (NIV), Pune.

Throat swab and serum samples of the techie and throat swab and blood samples of the NIMS patient were sent to Pune for analysis just as a precautionary measure. "It has been found that all the reported cases including the suspected cases had direct or indirect contact with the first casualty/his family prior to contacting the disease", it said.

Along with Zika virus and Ebola virus, Nipah virus is also included on the priority list of emerging diseases in the world which can even cause the global pandemic, according to WorldHealth Organisation.

"Hospital-acquired infections are a major path of human to human transmission", added Kumar, who heads the Manipal Centre for Virus Research that is testing virus samples.

The virus is spread through bodily fluids that can be passed from one creature to another.

The finding of dead bats was not an unusual event, said one state forest official.

They said the contact-tracing strategy adopted had been successful, especially in Kozhikode, Malappuram and other districts of the State.

Now areas around Kozhikode and Mallapuram district in Kerala is undergoing Nipah virus outbreak.

Referring to a case where a patient with viral fever was suspected to have contracted the disease, at Beliaghat ID Hospital, the health department denied that it was a Nipah virus case.

The primary treatment for humans is supportive care. The virus kills up to 75 percent of those infected.

Meanwhile, CEPI today announced a collaboration with Profectus BioSciences and Emergent BioSolutions to develop and make a vaccine against Nipah virus, which is harbored in bats and can spread to humans and livestock.

About 100 families where someone has had contact with infected people are being carefully monitored.

People wear safety masks at Kozhikode in Kerala on Friday.

Numerous handful of mourners who turned out for the burial were also wearing breathing masks.
