Lefty stoked to be teeing it up with Tiger at PLAYERS

Lefty stoked to be teeing it up with Tiger at PLAYERS

Whatever his motivation, it's not bad advice. The 2004 version featured John Daly and Mickelson against Woods and Hank Kuehne.

"I look at 2000 as being kind of the benchmark at the U.S. Open and being the greatest golf I've ever witnessed and I believe has ever been played".

"I love it. I mean, I love the chance. we're going to have a lot of fun", Mickelson said.

If social media is any indication, Mickelson may have a point. He's also finished in the top 10 five other times, and ranks second on tour in strokes-gained/putting.

To which Woods replied, during his news conference later, "I'm definitely not against that".

One year they were in the locker room at the Byron Nelson Classic when Mickelson challenged Woods to anything at their disposal. And it sucked to have to play against him.

"It's going to be hard but I would never say Tiger isn't going to do anything", Harman said when asked whether TIger can win another major Championship.

Later on Tuesday, Woods was asked about Mickelson's idea of a high-stakes match. Mickelson took The Players in 2007, although some young stars on the Tour - such as Rory McIlroy and Jordan Spieth - have not won the event yet. One of the high-water marks for Lefty in his Woods rivalry came at the 2012 AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am, when the duo was paired on Sunday. Woods will also get right back on the horse next week at The Players Championship, an event he's won twice.

A two-time victor of an event dubbed the unofficial fifth major, Woods will be in the field for the first time since 2015 when he tees off alongside Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler on Thursday.

Mickelson has never failed to give Woods credit for his impact on the game, particularly the attention he brought to golf that resulted in mammoth TV contracts and prize money that made everyone rich.

Woods has shown no signs of the struggles this year around the greens. But when they did it was normally a one-sided affair.

Leader Jason Day overcame a rocky start to finish at 4-under 67 in the third round of the Wells Fargo Championship here. And it (stunk) to have to play against him. At the time, Woods was just weeks away from completing the Tiger Slam by winning the Masters to claim his fourth consecutive major title.

"I don't think anybody today who wasn't there to witness it, and I don't think anybody before, will ever see that level of play again", Mickelson said Tuesday (via ESPN). "His mom and dad are fantastic, and just to have dinner with him to celebrate, that's very special when you're able to do that, and for him to share with mom and dad like that I think was probably even more special". As threesomes go, you'd have to say it's better than most. In recent times there has been a deep thawing of the pair's relationship. We don't get the opportunity to do it very often. "We always have", Woods said. "I think we should just do something on our own and get after it".
