Huawei And ZTE Banned From Selling Phones To US Military Base Retailers

The Pentagon has ordered all stores on USA military bases worldwide to ban mobile phones and other telecommunications equipment made by the Chinese companies Huawei Technologies Co.

"Huawei and ZTE devices may pose an unacceptable risk to the department's personnel, information and mission", said Eastburn.

Eastburn was quoted as saying "it was not prudent for the Department's exchange services to continue selling these products to our personnel", because of USA intelligence concerns at their security.

Though they can still be used, the Pentagon is urging military personnel to consider the security risks these devices could pose. This affects shops on or near USA military bases around the world. The other products like Mobile Internet modems and other wireless products are also included in the ban.

Donald Trump's administration has already targeted Huawei and ZTE, the number one and number four telecommunications equipment manufacturers, with a number of recent actions to restrict their businesses in the United States based on national security concerns.

In mid-April, the US Department of Commerce banned US companies from supplying kit to ZTE.

Wall Street Journal reports that Washington despatched a team to Beijing headed by Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin to hold talks over an ever-worsening economic relationship with China.

And in February, top officials from the CIA, NSA, FBI and the Defense Intelligence Agency told Congress that American citizens shouldn't use Huawei or ZTE phones.

The Pentagon is also evaluating whether a military-wide advisory regarding the purchase or use of the devices is necessary.
Unnamed sources told the newspaper that the Pentagon is anxious the devices will allow the Chinese government to track soldiers' locations.

It's the latest move in an ongoing crackdown on the companies by the USA government, which is suspicious that they could hack into their phones or use them for spying purposes. Best Buy recently made a decision to stop selling Huawei gear in the US.
