Hamburg relegated after 55 seasons in Bundesliga top flight

Hamburg were relegated from the Bundesliga for the first time in the club's history despite beating Borussia Monchengladbach 2-1 on the final day of the league campaign.

The thick smoke caused the game to be halted for more than 15 minutes while large numbers of police lined up facing the end from which the pyrotechnics had been launched.

Wolfsburg beat Cologne 4-1 to hold on to the play-off relegation spot, thereby consigning Hamburg to the drop regardless of their result.

Hamburg fans threw flare on to the pitch as their club's record top-flight run of 55 years came to a controversial end. "The club has lost one of its uniquenesses".

"The diamond [club logo] and us as a club are strong despite this current moment and we will in the future again reflect that strength".

Hamburg were leading 2-1 in stoppage-time when referee Felix Brych stopped the game.

After flirting with relegation in recent seasons, Hamburg needed a win and a favor from already-relegated Cologne against VfL Wolfsburg to maintain hope of another escape.

"I can not imagine Hamburg without Bundesliga football", said club great Uwe Seeler, West Germany's first post-war soccer star. A clock in the Volksparkstadion counted, to the second, the amount of time they spent in the league.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen might have pipped Dortmund to Europe's top competition on goal difference, but fell short in a 3-2 win over Hannover 96 and must be content with fifth place and Europa League qualification.

Bayern Munich, which sealed the title with five rounds to go, celebrated with the trophy and medals despite losing at home to Stuttgart 4-1.

That placing will see Stuttgart join Leverkusen and Leipzig in the Europa League, providing Frankfurt do not overcome Bayern in next weekend's DFB-Pokal final.
