Blue Flag status retained for central beach

Whitby has been given the award, so those visiting can be sure of a clean, safe beach with great facilities and water quality.

Several other Yorkshire coast beaches have been given the Seaside Award, which also celebrates cleanliness and safety.

Weymouth Central beach was given its first Blue Flag award in 15 years in 2016.

For families who want an assurance the the beach they choose to visit will be clean and safe, Keep Britain Tidy has announced the winners of 65 Blue Flags and 125 Seaside Awards all of which have great facilities and water quality.

30 years on, Wales now has more Blue Flags per mile than anywhere else in the UK.

People enjoying Sea Palling beach. Our research shows that almost two thirds (65 per cent) of parents would prefer to visit beaches with Blue Flag or Seaside Award status, so growing the number of beaches with an award is vital to encourage more families to visit our attractive coastline.

The South West retained its crown as Britain's beach capital with 26 Blue Flag and 50 Seaside Award standard shores.

Prior to that, Shanklin and Sandown held Blue Flags and in 2014, the Isle of Wight was able to boast the highest number of beaches awarded Blue Flags and Seaside Awards combined, in the country. "Hopefully next year we'll see an even greater number joining us as we drive up standards across the board".

This year's biggest victor is Pembrokeshire, which has achieved a total of 56 Coast Awards (11 Blue Flags, 14 Green Coast Awards and 31 Seaside Awards).
