Atletico coach Simeone expects great Europa League final against Marseille

Atletico Madrid defeated Marseille 3-0 in the Europa League final.

Antoine Griezmann has had a hand in more goals than any other Atlético Madrid player in European competition this season (10 - six goals and four assists), including a goal and an assist in their 2-1 aggregate win over Arsenal in the semi-finals.

"I hope he is happy with us".

The France striker has accounted for nine of his team's European goals this season, two more than his next two teammates combined. He was then among the Atletico players who did not seem quite right through the opening stages, as just minutes before the game's key moment he uncharacteristically lost possession deep in his own half.

Marseille's run has been surprising given they started their campaign against Oostende in late July, having only qualified as a outcome of Paris Saint-Germain's domestic cup success.

While a late headed strike by Marseille's Kostas Mitroglou - a 74th minute substitute - could have swung the momentum, it was not to be, and the ball rebounded harmlessly off the upright.

Just five minutes into the final half of Europa League football this season, Griezmann doubled Atletico's lead with a wonderful finish, giving Mandanda no chance and it appeared to put the final sword into Marseille's hopes of winning the tournament.

The dominance of Spanish team could be further underlined if Atletico's neighbors, Real Madrid, triumph against Liverpool in the final of the Champions League in Kiev on the 26th of May.

The striker missed a penalty in the 2016 Champions League final against Real Madrid which his side lost in a shootout and that made him more determined to perform against Marseille.

The Rojiblanco side's build-up to the game was dominated by talk over Griezmann's future, with a €100 million summer move to Barcelona reportedly lined up.

After the game, Super Eagles great Mutiu Adepoju was one of Twitter users of the opinion that La Liga is the best league in the world.

Only around 11,500 Marseille fans will officially be in attendance in a crowd of close to 60,000 and those without tickets have been urged not to travel amid fears of trouble between them and fans of Lyon. Having confirmed last month that he would leave the club for a second time, it was the last opportunity for him to win a major trophy with them.
