Sixers down Heat without Joel Embiid

Lastly, the Heat will need to be much more careful with the ball in future games.

The Sixers, of course, would defeat Miami comprehensively in Game 1 (130-103).

He is still out for Monday night's game vs. Miami.

JJ Redick scored 28 points and reserve Marco Belinelli added 25 to lead the Sixers, but it was rookie Simmons, who stole the show in his National Basketball Association playoff debut. He is 0 for 11 from 3-point range this season.

The expectation after last season's 18-win improvement was to have a Sixers team healthy enough to make a run at a.500 record with the possibility of playoffs in a weak Eastern Conference.

Embiid has cleared the NBA's concussion protocol, according to the club.

Sitting Whiteside didn't do anything to slow the Sixers.

Heat All-Star point guard Goran Dragic, who has been battling a bone bruise in his right knee for the past month, had his own struggles. The Heat, on the other hand, were led by Kelly Olynyk's 26 points.

Losing the opening round of a playoff series isn't a death sentence for the Miami. J.J. Redick led all scorers with 28 points while rookie Ben Simmons showed no early signs of playoff jitters in Philadelphia's first playoff win since 2012.

The Heat also had no answer for Sixers super subs Ersan Ilyasova and Belinelli; the duo combined to hit four 3-pointers in the third quarter that helped shift the tone from physical and foul-filled to a long-distance game that allowed the Sixers to put away this one.

The good news is that in their Game 1 matchup with the Miami Heat, they came out in the second half and stomped them like a narc at a biker rally.

ESPN reported Embiid and the Sixers are waiting for the mask to be cleared by the National Basketball Association, and Embiid likely will wear facial protection upon his return. Superstar center Joel Embiid appears to be on the wrong side of questionable for Game 1, but he's expected back at some point in the series.
