Senior Iranian official hopes U.S. forces will be driven from Syria

Russia, Assad's most important ally in his seven-year-old war with rebels, said it deployed military police in Douma on Thursday after the town was taken over by government forces.

Trump slammed Russian Federation on April 11 for its military alliance with Assad, saying it should not "be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it".

But today, Trump tweeted: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

Trump and other Western leaders have vowed a quick and forceful response to Saturday's alleged gas attack, which rescue workers say killed more than 40 people.

The Russian military said it had observed movements of USA navy forces in the Gulf.

Syria's military has repositioned some air assets to avoid fallout from possible missile strikes, US officials told Reuters on Wednesday.

Last April, when U.S. warships in the Mediterranean fired cruise missiles at a Syrian air base, Russian forces were warned in advance and pulled out of the target area, which was rapidly repaired.

President Donald Trump on Thursday softened his rhetoric about potential airstrikes on Syria, a day after warning Russian Federation that missiles "will be coming, nice and new and 'smart'". The officials said they were "confident" in the intelligence though not 100 percent sure, NBC News said on its website.

In the meantime members of the chemical weapons watchdog the OPCW are preparing to visit the site of the suspected attack to determine if chemicals were used but not to assign blame.

The threat of military response still hung in air, with French President Emmanuel Macron saying that there's proof that Syrian leader Bashar Assad's regime used chemical weapons.

"Germany will not take part in possible - there have not been any decisions yet, I want to stress that - military action", Merkel said following a meeting with Danish Prime Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen in Berlin. He hits out at Russian Federation and Iran over their backing for "Animal Assad". Any missile attack that puts Russian lives at risk, Moscow has said, would result in Russia striking back at the missiles and at the planes or ships that launched them.

Tokyo issued a similar response in April previous year when the United States conducted a missile strike on a Syrian air base that was the alleged source of a chemical attack that killed dozens of civilians. And as recently as March 29, Trump mulled ending USA military action in Syria now that the Islamic State's presence and power there is decimated. When the Syrian military pummels civilians, they rely on the military hardware given by Russian Federation. There is no reason for this, he wrote, adding that "Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together".

Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia urged the U.S. on Thursday to avoid military action, saying the "immediate priority is to avert the danger of war".

The President has been mulling strikes against the Assad regime for suspected use of chlorine-based chemical weapons against civilians Saturday. An unidentified Syrian Foreign Ministry official cited by state-run TV accused the Americans of sponsoring the lies of "terrorists" as a pretext to attack Syria.

Labour's Jeremy Corbyn, leader of the opposition, says that a vote is necessary and bombing could lead to a hot war between the US and Russian Federation, which has promised to answer any strikes.

British Prime Minister Theresa May was due to hold an emergency cabinet meeting amid speculation she will support United States action against the Syrian regime. Get ready Russian Federation, because they will be coming, nice and new and "smart!", Mr Trump tweeted. A U.S. guided-missile destroyer, the USS Donald Cook, is in the Mediterranean.

A day earlier, European airspace authorities warned aircraft to be careful over the next few days when flying close to Syria because of the possibility of air or missile strikes into the country.
