Rahul prods PM to speak

Amid the growing outrage over Kathua and Unnao rape cases, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday broke his silence and said such incidents can not be part of a civilised society.

Even the reaction of the normally tweet-happy Prime Minister Narendra Modi was a case of too little too late, coming as it did only on Friday evening, three full days after the incident had started gnawing at the collective conscience of the nation from Kashmir to Kerala. "The Congress stands for justice to the minor victim of rape and murder and demands the culprits get exemplary punishment", he said.

Apart from Rahul, his sister Priyanka Gandhi Vadra along with her husband Robert Vadra and scores other Congress leader also joined the protest march.

Arguing that the issue was not rape but the attitude of the governments and the law-enforcing agencies, Singhvi said: "Why didn't the Prime Minister, Uttar Pradesh chief minister Ajay Bisht and J&K chief minister Mehbooba Mufti speak about the incidents despite a national outcry?" Rahul Gandhi in his tweet wrote, "Mr". He said Modi's slogan of "Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao" was a correct slogan.

"We are here against crimes being committed against women, against rapes, violence and murder and the government must act on this". India simply can not continue to treat its women the way it does.

She was sedated and repeatedly raped before her head was smashed and her body thrown in the forests next to Rasana village. Why are accused rapists and murderers protected by the state?

The long-delayed charge sheet in the Kathua case indicates that eight-year-old Asifa was held in a captivity in a temple, raped by six men, and then bludgeoned to death.

"We are saying that Narendra Modi should begin the task of protecting women of the country", he said. "He isn't taking action against his ministers who are trying to save the rape accused", said Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.

The BJP spokesperson also clarified that her party does not support the act of two BJP Jammu and Kashmir ministers who were seen at a rally supporting the alleged Kathua rapists.

In the first FIR, the CBI named Sengar and Shashi Singh, a woman who allegedly took the rape victim to the Bharatiya Janata Party leader's house. The J&K Police have arrested 8 culprits in connection with the crime.
