The New York Knicks have fired coach Jeff Hornacek, the team announced Thursday.

The New York Knicks are going to reach out to Villanova's Jay Wright about their head coaching position, which is open after Knicks management fired Jeff Hornacek, the New York Daily News reported. There are simply more experienced and better connected candidates to Knicks general manager Scott Perry and president Steve Mills. "We sincerely appreciate his efforts and considerable contributions to the team and wish him well in his future endeavors".

This, of course, is far from the first time a Knicks executive has stood in front of the cameras and preached patience.

So, yes, the Knicks will reportedly try and lure Wright away.

While 16 teams prepare for the postseason, the Knicks are preparing for what they do often but not necessarily well; search for a new head coach.

The Knicks' downward turn began in early February when franchise centerpiece Kristaps Porzingis tore his ACL.

Hornacek coached just two seasons with the Knicks after a two-and-a-half-year stint with Phoenix.

He also has connections to the Knicks, having been drafted by them in 1987 and playing for them from 1987-1992 and 2001-2002.

"We looked out and we have a plan for what this team should look like over the next three years or so", Knicks President Steve Mills said. After that, they could not stop losing, and it got painful to watch. "I love it here". They didn't even wait until the morning after.

Van Gundy and Jackson understand the NY market and know how to navigate the land mines at Madison Square Garden. He's viewed as one of the rising stars in the National Basketball Association coaching world after his long playing career and will get a head job sooner rather than later.

The fact that Blatt didn't get the full backing of his players in Cleveland could be cause for concern, but that was a team of hard-headed veterans. That's a story for another day.

Vogel didn't get any breaks this season, as Magic players combined to miss a combined 227 games due to injuries or illnesses, and a 4-27 record from November 11 to January 12 sent Orlando careening back to the draft lottery. This team stunk coming out of timeouts. Who are they looking at to replace him?

With Anthony, Noah and Derrick Rose all gone, the Knicks lacked the veteran roster this season they had when Hornacek was hired with playoff expectations. But in the end, the losses fall directly on the head coach.

Damyean Dotson, the Knicks' second-round pick, flashed a few times at the end of the year but couldn't find consistent minutes. From Mike Woodson to Derek Fisher to a cup of coffee with Kurt Rambis to Hornacek, it's been ugly.

Vogel was sacked by the Magic on Thursday about 10 hours after the team wrapped up a 25-57 season, its sixth consecutive losing year. But he wasn't the right person to lead this latest Knicks rebuild.
