'The Crown' Star Claire Foy Paid Less Than Co-Star Matt Smith

'The Crown' Star Claire Foy Paid Less Than Co-Star Matt Smith

'Going forward, no one gets paid more than the Queen, ' said Mackie. During a panel at the INTV Conference in Jerusalem, the showrunners behind the hit series, based on historical accounts of the British royal family, confirmed the gender pay gap between Foy who played the Queen and Smith, who played Prince Philip.

That's because when filming began, Smith, who plays the queen's querulous husband, Prince Philip, hailed from the popular "Doctor Who" franchise, producers explained.

In response, the series' producers, Suzanne Mackie and Andy Harries, acknowledged the 35-year-old male English actor was paid more owing to his Doctor Who fame, but said the practice would be rectified in the future, according to USA entertainment magazine Variety. The reasoning at the time, Mackie explained, boiled down to prominence: Matt Smith was an global figure due to his leading work on Doctor Who, while Foy was relatively unknown to viewers outside the constraints of the United Kingdom.

But sadly for Claire Foy, this new rule will not benefit her in the role of Queen Elizabeth, but it will help the new Queen Elizabeth in the series The Crown, Olivia Colman.

Helena Bonham-Carter will replace Vanessa Kirby as Elizabeth's sister, the late Princess Margaret. "We put that money on the screen", said Andy Harries, the chief executive of Left Bank, adding that 120 different costumes were created for the queen just for Season 2. "It's daunting but exciting and I hope it'll keep the series fresh and really of interest to people". Foy received high praise for her portrayal of the restrained monarch, in which she nailed everything from the Queen's posh accent to her physical poise.

Foy's critically acclaimed performance has won her prestigious awards, including best lead actress in a drama at last year's Golden Globes, an honor she was nominated for again this year. But how do you continue to justify it for a second season?

Earlier this year actress Michelle Williams was paid a fraction of what her All The Money In The World co-star Mark Wahlberg earned for the movie's reshoots.

In January, Forbes reported that the 10 highest-paid actors in Hollywood brought in a total of $488.5 million, while the 10 highest-paid actresses earned less than half of that, with $172.5 million.
