Statues of Gandhi and BR Ambedkar vandalised in Kerala and Tamil Nadu

Kannur: In keeping with the flavour of the season, a statue of Mahatma Gandhi was damaged by unknown persons in the Thaliparamba area of Kannur.

An investigation has been launched into the incident, reports said.

A day earlier, PM Modi had condemned such acts of vandalism and spoken to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh over the issue. Acting swiftly in the matter, the police have arrested a 42-year-old man who is said to be mentally unstable. According to reports, Chennai police took cognizance of the matter and rushed to the spot at around 9 am. According to police officials, the miscreant is yet to be identified and fled the scene after committing the crime.

Amid an ongoing spate of incidents targeting statues and busts of known figures across the country, Ambedkar's statue was also vandalised but later replaced in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. Two people - one from BJP and the other from CPI - were arrested in connection with the incident.

The incidents in Tamil Nadu were triggered after BJP leader H Raja had in a Facebook comment indicated that Periyar's statue would meet the fate as that of Lenin's statue. Police personnel were deployed in the area to prevent any untoward incident. The officials later said that a new Ambedkar statue had been installed.
