Oscars2018: Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney win Best supporting actor award

The actor dedicated his award to legendary veteran actor and his friend Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Actor Sam Rockwell won the 2018 Oscar for best supporting actor on Sunday night (March 4). "I want to get that ski jet, or whatever that was", Rockwell said, alluding to host Jimmy Kimmel's offer in his opening monologue of a jet ski for whichever nominee could give the shortest speech tonight. "You guys rock, you inspire me, and you always have".

This is the first Oscar for the actor.

"When I was 8-years-old I was called into the principal's office and my father was looking very solemn and he said, 'We gotta go, it's grandma, '" recalled Rockwell.

'If I had a choice I'd let the film speak for itself movies always take five or ten years to be seen as a piece of work that it is, but it's nearly more of an awards season thing that I had to say that, ' he said.

Even so, Rockwell isn't likely to be the only victor for Three Billboards tonight.

Reuniting with his Seven Psychopaths director McDonagh, Rockwell starred in Three Billboards as Officer Jason Dixon, a violent and racist cop who finds some redemption in his bloody efforts to help find the killer of Mildred Hayes' (McDormand) daughter. "It's not like they're all of a sudden redeemed at the end of the movie". "It's a dark fairy tale of some sorts, in real life we probably would have gone to prison". He also took home the Golden Globe earlier this year, as well as the Screen Actors Guild Award. "I never thought I'd say those words", Rockwell, 49, said when taking the stage, before thanking all of his fellow nominees - Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project), Woody Harrelson (Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri), Richard Jenkins (The Shape of Water) and Christopher Plummer (All the Money in the World).
