Iran slams Britain for 'dishonest' behavior at UN

Nine votes and no vetoes from the five permanent council members-Britain, France, China, Russia and the United States-are required to adopt resolutions at the Security Council.

The council is set to vote Monday on renewing sanctions on Yemen for a year, but a British-drafted text also calls for "additional measures" in response to a United Nations report that found Iran had violated the arms embargo on Yemen.

In March 2015, a Saudi-led, US -backed coalition began what has turned into a devastating war that has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced 2 million, and created the world's worst humanitarian disaster.

Russian Federation was joined by Bolivia in opposing the resolution, while China and Kazakhstan abstained from voting.

The UK draft would have caused "fracturing of security council and sow discord at a time when the Security Council is in dire need of closing its ranks", he argued, adding that Russia's concerns about the divisive nature of the UK draft were "shared by many delegates".

Khoshroo added that Iran rejects the United States false claims that Iran handed over weapons to Yemen, emphasizing that those claims are aimed at helping the aggressors.

Kuwait's U.N. Ambassador Mansour Al-Otaiba is the current council president.

Britain initially included a condemnation of Iran in its draft resolution to extend sanctions and the mandate for the panel of experts to continue their work - but dropped it because of Russian opposition.

The Iranian diplomat also reiterated Tehran's stance on Yemen, stressing that only a political solution and intra-Yemeni dialog can put an end to the country's conflict.

Russian Federation proposed its own resolution to extend sanctions against Yemen for one year without mentioning Iran, which was unanimously approved by the security council.

The experts said in a January report that they'd identified Iranian missile remnants and other equipment introduced into Yemen after the 2015 arms embargo that were fired into Saudi Arabia.

The 15-member Security Council has to renew its targeted sanctions on Yemen on Monday.

"Today, Russia protected the terrorist-sponsoring regime in Iran", said Haley, who was traveling to Honduras.

"Russia doesn't like the outcome of certain expert panel reports", Jonathan Allen, UK deputy ambassador to the United Nations, told reporters before the vote was scheduled to take place.

But the United States has accused Iran of being the aggressor and has pressed the UN council repeatedly to take action to punish Tehran.

A Saudi-led coalition supporting Yemen's government has been fighting the Huthis since 2015 in a war that has led to what the United Nations describes as the world's worst humanitarian crisis.

Gholamali Khoshroo further went on to dismiss the allegations that his country had been providing weapons to Yemen's Ansarullah movement.

An alarming 17 million people in Yemen - 60 percent of the total population - are in need of food aid, of whom seven million are on the brink of starvation because of the conflict, according to the United Nations.
