Flu-related outpatient visits, hospitalizations drop in MA

Out of the 114 pediatric flu deaths in the United States this season, there were two flu-related deaths in West Virginia.

"As we continue to invest in the future of manufacturing and vaccine technology, we also need to remember the importance of simply ensuring that more people are vaccinated with available vaccines each flu seasons", he explained. And the proportion of outpatient visits for flu-like illness during the same period dipped to 6.5 percent, from 11.9 percent.

Developing an effective flu shot is hard as doctors must try to predict what strains will be active, which is particularly tricky as strains evolve and mutate - and they must do it far in advance of the actual season so manufacturers will have time to make enough vaccine to meet demand, explained Blumberg. "Overall vaccine efficacy improves with the newer technologies if their quicker manufacturing times are combined with government-provided seed virus submissions from increased surveillance at the global level for mutations in the antigenic target of flu vaccines". Seven people died of the flu in the last week. The health department reported a spike in ER visits for ages 5-18 for the week ending February 9.

The latest figures showed flu is still proving a problem across the United Kingdom, but that infections have "peaked", PHE said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention simply states "a flu shot can not cause flu illness".

Flu deaths have risen to 201 in SC, but the state's department of health says the illness is beginning to slow down.

"Now, about 45 percent [of cases] are influenza B", he said.

This year is the worst for influenza in almost a decade, with more than 14,000 New Jersey cases identified by lab tests and many more untested.

The week of the report, the State Hygienic Laboratory at the University of Iowa, which is the primary lab for influenza testing and reporting, detected 16 influenza "A" viruses and 42 influenza "B" viruses.

The medical community promotes getting a flu shot, which is the proven best way to avoid getting the flu or at least decrease the severity of the illness. Cell-based and recombinant vaccine production not only allow for direct incorporation of sequenced circulating influenza viruses, but can also be completed more quickly than the egg-based approach.
