Fire Marshal: Change Batteries When Changing Clocks

"Once a year, old batteries should be replaced with new batteries", said Fire Chief Steve Laforet in a news release.

You never want to see the fire department fighting flames at your home, but if fire sparks, it's important to have working smoke alarms.

Smoke alarms aren't effective if they aren't working properly. The Firemen's Association of the State of NY said batteries in the alarms should be checked on a regular basis.

Checking a smoke alarm is as simple as pushing the test button on the alarm.

"Also, we will install smoke alarms in homes particular in at risk populations". The manufacturer date can be found on the back of the smoke alarm. Replace all smoke alarms every 10 years, test them monthly and clean them regularly.

Smoke alarms lose sensitivity over time and should be replaced periodically.

"Call us, if you live in Knox County, the part we serve, we'll come put them up for you, we'll change your batteries".

The National Fire Protection Association reports that 71 percent of smoke alarms that failed to operate had missing, disconnected or dead batteries. They add that that smoke detectors should be in hallways that lead to sleeping areas, basements and on every level of homes. These same households often rely on poorly installed, maintained or misused portable or area heating equipment - a main cause of fatal home fires. Take care of the alarm according to its instruct ions. Together, we can Sound the Alarm about fire safety and help save lives.

"Smoke alarms are the first warning sign of a fire, which give you potentially lifesaving seconds to escape", State Fire Marshal Jeff A. Hussey said.

Daylight saving time begins at 2 a.m. Sunday, when clocks "spring" forward one hour.
