Elmore's 27 lead 13th-seeded Marshall over Wichita St 81-75

Elmore's 27 lead 13th-seeded Marshall over Wichita St 81-75

"I would say that the teams they remind us the most of that we've played this year are Savannah State and South Dakota State", Wichita State's Marshall said of the Herd.

Marshall's last NCAA tournament appearance came in 1987 but was later vacated, and the Thundering Herd had just one win in any non-conference postseason tournament - over Western Carolina in the 2010 Tournament - since 1967. "I think we've gotten hot at the right time".

Wichita State might be nicknamed the Shockers, but it was the Marshall Thundering Herd who pulled the NCAA Tournament surprise on Friday in San Diego.

Marshall joined Buffalo as 13th seeds to win this week. Marshall plays the Murray State-West Virginia victor in the next round. Frankamp leads the Shockers with 14 points.

While the Thundering Herd was able to conquer Wichita State, taking down the Rockets is a completely different monster.

"This is another day in the park", he said. "I don't care who you put on me I'm going to attack you 40 minutes, and that's what we did tonight".

Elmore scored nine straight points midway through the second half, including two 3-pointers, to help Marshall keep pace after it allowed the Shockers to go on a 15-1 run spanning halftime.

Elmore was fantastic, going for 27 points on just 13 shots from the floor (4-8 from downtown) and 11-15 shooting from the foul line. The Shockers thrive off their inside-out duo of sophomore guard Landry Shamet and senior forward Shaquille Morris. Marshall had 11 steals, including a few key moments late, and while the officiating was hardly great (both in terms of judgment calls and replay management), this was not an undeserved loss for Wichita State.
